FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Utah Day 1 Books Access?

The Utah Day 1 Books Access Program is a new textbook model, in collaboration with the University Marriott Library and publishers, which converts course materials/textbooks for the course into digital content. All students in the class buy into the content, lowering the cost substantially (up to 80%). All students in that class also get access to the content on the first day. It also gives students the flexibility to choose what works best for them by offering full access, a la carte purchasing or completely opting out to purchase course materials on their own. Special order physical textbooks are still available to order through the University of Utah Campus Store.

The $259 course materials charge for digital and print textbooks is applied to all student accounts when they enroll in one or more undergraduate courses (900-5999). Graduate level courses (6000+), all NURS courses, Asia Campus courses and Continuing Ed courses will automatically be opted in to the Instant Access program, which provides immediate access to the digital materials only for that course(s) via Bookshelf in Canvas. The Instant Access program does not include print textbooks, those must be purchased separately. Accessing the Instant Access ebooks and opting out of the ebook materials that are not wanted can be done via Bookshelf.

How much does Day 1 Books Access cost?

Students will pay a $259 low flat rate fee per semester. If a student would like to choose which course materials they would like specifically, they can choose the a la carte tier. If a student would like to purchase course materials on their own, they are able to opt-out of the Day 1 Books Access program.

How will I get my access code?

If you're opted-in to Day 1 Books Access you are already enrolled. You will be notified via email to your official University of Utah issued email account (or email of record) prior to the start of class with access instructions, the discounted price of a la carte options, and instructions on how to opt-out.

How do I pay for my access?

The access is complimentary through the semester add/drop date. The $259 charge will be automatically be added to your account at the start of the semester. If you would like to keep full access to Day 1 Access, you do not need to take any action.
If you would like to select the a la carte program option, you will need to select which course materials you would like to keep access to by the add/drop deadline each semester. After the add/drop deadline you will only be charged for the course materials you selected.
If you would like to opt-out of the program completely because textbooks are not required or you would like to purchase course materials on your own, you will need to opt-out by the add/drop deadline each semester. At that point all course materials charges will be removed from your account.

What does it mean to opt-out?

If you do not wish to participate in Day 1 Books Access you have until the add/drop deadline each semester to opt-out of the program online (the opt-out procedure will be outlined in your emailed information). If you opt-out by the deadline given access to the online content will be turned off and you will not be billed. You will then be responsible in obtaining the course materials yourself for the course.

I opted out by mistake and realized that I still need my course materials. Can I opt back in?

Yes if it's before the add/drop deadline. Simply email the Day 1 Access team at day1access@campusstore.utah.edu to request that your access be reinstated.

All enrolled students are emailed about the program to their official University of Utah email address (or email of record). If it is not in a spam folder or was accidentally deleted, email the Day 1 Books Access team at day1access@campusstore.utah.edu for access instructions.

I did not opt-out, but I did not register my access or use the online platform. Will I still be billed?

Yes. All students who are enrolled in an undergraduate course are automatically considered part of the Day 1 Books Access program. To avoid being billed you must OPT- OUT online before the add/drop deadline each semester.

I dropped the course. Do I still need to opt-out?

If a student is enrolled in a single course and drops the course before the add/drop deadline (usually within the first 10 days of class), they will automatically be "opted out" and will not be billed. If a student is enrolled in multiple courses, they will need to select which program tier they would like access to by the add/drop deadline each semester. There are no refunds for students who drop after the add/drop deadline each semester.

I forgot to opt-out and missed the deadline. Can I get a refund now?

Once billing has been completed after the add/drop date, there are no refunds.

How does the J. Willard Marriott Library provide access to course materials for students in the Utah Day 1 Access program?

The J. Willard Marriott Library is committed to collaborating with the Campus Store to provide access to select digital and print materials, prioritizing licensing options that enable all enrolled students the ability to access content at the same time. When those licensing options are unavailable, the Library works to make physical copies and limited user electronic copies available through the library’s Course Materials services.

I didn't get an email about my course, but other students in my class did. Was I sent an email?

All enrolled students are emailed about the program to their official University email address (or email of record). If it is not in a spam folder or was accidentally deleted, email the Day 1 Books Access team at day1access@campusstore.utah.edu for access instructions.

How do I maintain access to my perpetual/lifetime e-book once the semester ends?

Perpetual or Lifetime titles will expire from VitalSource Bookshelf once your course ends. To maintain access to the title, it needs to be downloaded within the semester it is being used. If the semester has already ended, contact VitalSource Support and they'll help you download the Lifetime version.

Access duration to ebooks is determined by the publisher (as far as what rights they allow for access) and by the price (the lowest price option is chosen to save students expense on the program). The duration of each ebook title is clearly visible on the title in Bookshelf. You may upgrade your option to an extended duration, including perpetual, through Bookshelf as well.
