Our History

Our roots go back over 100 years. Over time, we have evolved from a minor operation in a vacant classroom to one of the finest and largest college stores in North America. The University of Utah has had a Campus Store (or Bookstore) since 1894 when the faculty of the school came to a “gentlemen’s agreement” about the creation of the store. At that time, the profits of the store went to badly needed reference books for the library. In 1900, this gentlemen’s agreement fell apart, and the Board of Regents oversaw the creation of a bookstore that has continued to this day. We started in a small classroom in the Park Building, moving in 1947 to barracks purchased from Ft. Douglas, and then finally in 1961 to its present location. In 1975, the store was remodeled to add the North wing of the store. Those remodels have continued through the years, most recently in 2015 when we added a Starbucks and remodeled the interior of the store.
